Rhinelander Farm has expanded. In addition to breeding Scottish Highland Cattle, we’ve crossed some of our cows with a medium-mini, Dexter bull. The Dexter was red/dun, polled, 48″ at the hip, and about 950 lbs. Some of the offspring have horns, so the Dexter bull was obviously not homozygous for that characteristic. The crossbreeds that we’ll keep for breeding are polled. The horned animals will be sold. Our goal is to breed a hearty, hornless, medium sized animal with a good double hair coat, less hoof, and a great disposition. The cross is often called a “Highdex”, but perhaps “Northern Lights” might be a better fit. It should make a great backyard animal for those who want to raise a couple head.
